Spartans Head to Las Vegas for Matchup With UNLV

LAS VEGAS - The San José State men's basketball team (9-20, 2-14 Mountain West) will play UNLV (17-10, 10-5 Mountain West) on Saturday night on CBS Sports Network and KTRB 860 AM. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center.

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Spartans fell 72-64 against No. 20 San Diego State on Tuesday night.
  • Myron (MJ) Amey Jr. led the Spartans with 17 points and 10 rebounds for the third double-double of his career.
  • The Spartans outscored the Aztecs 25-17 in the final 10 minutes and trailed by only four, 66-62, with 31 seconds left.
  • Three other Spartans scored in double figures as Trey AndersonLatrell Davis and Alvaro Cardenas tallied 14, 13 and 11 points, respectively.
  • William Humer registered a career-high two blocks and tied T. Anderson for the game high.

SEASON NOTABLES

  • Amey Jr. scored 100 points over the last five games for an average of 20 points per game. He registered at least 17 points in each of the five contests.
  • In three of the last four games, Davis scored in double figures. The freshman guard produced a career-high 20 points against Wyoming, 17 points versus Nevada and 13 points at San Diego State. He shot 50 percent or better in all three contests.
  • The Spartans are 5-0 when shooting over 50 percent this season. The five opponents against whom they have shot over 50 percent are Bethesda, Norfolk State, New Orleans, Santa Clara and Air Force.
  • The Spartans are second in the Mountain West Conference in 3-pointers made per game at 8.66, behind only Air Force.
  • Cardenas is 31st and 40th in Division I in assists per game (5.4) and assist/turnover ratio (2.71). In the conference, he is sixth and fourth in the two categories.
  • Adrame Diongue is third in the conference in blocks per game at 1.46.

RECORD WATCH

  • Tibet Görener is the Spartans’ all-time leader in made 3-pointers with 167.
  • Cardenas and T. Anderson also rank inside the top 10 in program history for most 3-pointers. Cardenas is sixth and T. Anderson is tied for eighth.
  • Cardenas ranks sixth all-time for most career assists at SJSU with 353. Omari Moore (2020-23) is fifth with 429. 
  • T. Anderson ranks fourth in school history in 3-point percentage (among players who have played in at least 50 games and averaged one or more 3-point attempts per game). His career mark from beyond the arc is 40.3 percent, connecting on 123 of 305 attempts.

VS. UNLV 

  • The UNLV Runnin' Rebels are coming off a 75-69 overtime victory at Wyoming on Tuesday.
  • The Spartans are 8-45 all-time against the Runnin’ Rebels.
  • When the Spartans and Runnin' Rebels played earlier this season, on Jan. 27, the Spartans led at halftime but ended up falling, 77-65.
  • Amey Jr. led the Spartans with 18 points in the game, while Cardenas added 14 points and a game-high six assists.
