LAS VEGAS – Alvaro Cardenas produced game highs of 18 points and nine rebounds to lead the San José State men’s basketball team (9-23, 2-16 Mountain West) in a 72-62 loss to Colorado State (23-9, 10-8 Mountain West) in the first round of the Mountain West Tournament on Wednesday afternoon.

  • The Spartans led for over 12 minutes and trailed by only two with a couple minutes remaining against the Rams, who received votes in the most recent AP Top 25 Poll.

  • Cardenas set his career high for points in the tournament, besting the 14 he registered against Nevada in last year’s quarterfinal.
  • The 16 points for Davis were the most points scored by a Spartan freshman in a conference tournament game since Omari Moore tallied 17 against New Mexico in 2020.
  • Cardenas dished out a team-high six assists.
  • Amey Jr. collected two steals.
