SAN JOSE, Calif. – Shay McDowell went 2-for-4 with her first triple of the season and Alexis Toner was strong in relief to lead San José State softball (9-11, 0-1 MW) in a 6-5 loss to New Mexico (8-21, 1-0 MW) in the first game of this three game series opening up Mountain West play from Spartan Softball Stadium.
After getting off to a slow start, down 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the spartans clawed their way back loading the bases with one out and after a clutch 3-run triple by Aubrie Thomas, closed the gap to bring the score to 5-4. Malia Luna would come up in the next inning with a runner on third and tie the game with a pinch hit sac fly. The game would go into extra innings before New Mexico reclaimed the lead for good in the top of the eighth inning.
- McDowell went 2-for-4 with a single, triple and a run scored.
- McDowell's triple is her first on the season and first with the spartans.
- A. Thomas went 1-for-3 with three RBIs including a triple in the fifth inning to make the score 5-4.
- Luna entered the game as a pinch hitter and tied the game with a sac fly.
- Toner went 7.1 IP with two earned runs and only one walk.
- Aneesa Almaguer went 1-for-4 with a single.
- Ashley Rico went 1-for-4 with a single.
