FULLERTON, Calif. - Reina Zermeno hit her second home run of the season to lead San José State softball (6-8, 0-0 Mountain West) in a 3-1 loss to DePaul (4-14, 0-0 Big East) and a 5-1 loss against No. 18 UCLA (11-6, 0-0 Pac-12) Sunday in the final day of the Judi Garman Classic from Anderson Family Field on the campus of Cal State Fullerton.
Zermeno scored all the runs for the Spartans on Sunday and hit .533 with eight hits, six RBIs, six runs scored, four doubles, a home run, had two stolen bases including stealing home on Saturday, plus had a 1.000 slugging pct. and a .533 on base pct. in the five games of the Judi Garman Classic.
Game 1 vs. DePaul
- Carly Cummings had a pinch hit RBI single in the seventh inning for her third RBI of the season.
- Ashley Rico went 2-for-3.
- Aubrie Thomas, Aneesa Almaguer, Taylor Squires and Zermeno all hit singles for the Spartans.
- Zermeno scored the Spartans lone run.
- Mia Reynolds went 4.2 IP while only letting up two runs and three hits.
- Lacie Ham went 1.1 IP in relief.
- SJSU left five on base.
- DePaul scored runs in the second, third and sixth innings.
Game 2 vs. No. 18 UCLA
- Zermeno gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning with a solo home run.
- UCLA scored all their runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
- Alexis Toner pitched a gem going 6.0 IP while striking out three and only allowing three earned runs.
- Squires led off the game with her second double of the season.
- Cummings also had a hit for the Spartans.
- The Spartans left four on base.
- UCLA had a baserunner in every inning.
