SAN JOSE, Calif. - San José State women's water polo player Grace Smith was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Newcomer of the Week, announced by the conference Tuesday morning.
"I think Grace's effort in the cage has been a tremendous asset to our team," said head coach Beth Harberts. "Her leadership and energy she brings to the team sets a tone for team defense which is burgeoning as one of our strongest attributes. We are proud of her hard work and pumped she received this recognition.

- Tallied 11 saves and two steals to lead the No. 21 San José State women's water polo team in their 13-12 double-overtime win against No. 13 UCSB.
- In the match against No. 3 Stanford, Smith recorded two saves, a steal, and an assist during the two quarters she played.
- Recorded a crucial block during the second overtime period to keep the Gauchos from winning the game.
- This is the first MPSF weekly award that Smith has received.
- ASU's Luca Petovary is this week's MPSF Player of the Week.
