SAN JOSE, Calif. – Ahmiya Noriega had a game-winning hit, Mia Reynolds had a perfect game into the sixth inning and Korie Thomas had four hits on the day to lead San José State softball (7-9, 0-0 MW) in a 3-2 win over Cal State Bakersfield (2-15, 0-0 Big West) and a 3-2 loss against Iowa (8-5, 0-0 Big 10) in the first day of the Silicon Valley Classic II from Spartan Softball Stadium.
In the game against CSUB, the Spartans had runners on first and second base with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning and down one run as Ah. Noriega hit a single to right field that got by CSUB's right fielder who made a fielding error allowing two runners to score including Shay McDowell who slid past the Bakersfield catcher to dodge the tag for the game-winning run.
Game One vs. Iowa
- K. Thomas went 2-for-3 and knocked in both the Spartans' runs with her second double of the season.
- Ah. Noriega went 1-for-2 with a run scored.
- McDowell also scored a run for the Spartans.
- Aneesa Almaguer caught her first runner of the season trying to steal a base.
- Alexis Toner struck out three in 2.1 IP of relief.
- Every one of Iowa's nine hits were singles.
Game Two vs. CSUB
- K. Thomas went 2-for-2 in the win.
- Ah. Noriega went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
- Haley Reeve hit the lone RBI for the Spartans.
- Aubrie Thomas, McDowell and Ah. Noriega all scored runs for the Spartans.
- Reynolds shut down the first 15 batters she faced while striking out three.
