Spartans Fall in Tight Game Against San Diego State

SAN JOSE, Calif. –  Taylor Squires and Shay McDowell both had multi-hit games to lead San José State softball (13-23, 3-10 MW) in a 9-8 loss in the third and final game of this series against San Diego State (26-14, 13-3 MW) on Sunday from Spartan Softball Stadium.

The Spartans showed some fight in this game, coming from behind two different times to tie and retake the lead in the bottom of the second and the bottom of the fourth innings respectively. However they couldn’t hold on in the seventh when the Aztecs reclaimed the lead they would not relinquish.

  • McDowell went 2-for-4 with two singles, two RBIs and one run scored.  
  • Squires went 2-for-4 with two RBI singles and two runs scored.
  • Squires’ two RBIs set a new single game season high for the junior.
  • Ashley Rico went 2-for-4 with two singles and one run scored
  • Rico’s two hits and one run scored tied her single game season highs in both categories. 
  • Reina Zermeno went 1-for-3 with a two RBI double and one run scored.
  • Makenzie Hutchinson went 1-for-2 with a single.
  • Haley Reeve was 1-for-3 with a single and an RBI.
  • The Spartans as a team hit .455 with runners in scoring position going 5-for-11.

NEXT GAME: The Spartans will be back on the road for another midweek non-conference game against Saint Mary’s on Wednesday, April 17. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. PDT from Moraga, Calif.
