Spartans Go 1-1 On First Day of Southland Conference Championship

HOUSTON, Texas—Siena Brewster and Meredith Scott clinched the winning point for the San José State beach volleyball team for a 3-1 win over New Orleans before the Spartans fell to top-seed Texas A&M Corpus Christi 3-0 on the first day of the Southland Conference Championship in Houston.

San José State 3, New Orleans 1

  • The fourth-seeded Spartans started the day by defeating the fifth-seed New Orleans 3-1.
  • Cheyenne Rice and Teila Allen recorded the first Spartan point with a 21-18, 21-15 win.
  • Anna Salmon and Shirley Morrison won 22-20, 21-8 to give SJSU a 2-1 lead.
  • Brewster and Scott won in straight sets 21-15 and 21-15 to help San José State advance in the winner’s bracket.

Texas A&M Corpus Christi 3, San José State 0

  • The Spartans then faced top-seeded Texas A&M Corpus Christi after the Islanders won 3-0 over Nicholls.
  • Tessa Rogers and Alexandra Dale won the first set 22-20, falling in the second set 22-20 and forcing a set three. The pair lost 15-7 in set three.
  • Rice and Allen lost the first set 21-12, but rebounded to win 21-18 to force a third set before falling 15-11.

UP NEXT – The Spartans will face the winner of the McNeese-Southeastern match to be played Saturday morning. San José State will face that winner at 12 p.m. CT/10 a.m. PT.
