Spartans Take New Mexico in First Game of Huge Series

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Matt Spear hit a two-run home run to lead San José State baseball (21-30, 15-13 MW) in an 8-7 win against New Mexico (27-23, 16-12 MW) from Excite Ballpark Thursday evening on NBC Sports Bay Area in the first of a three-game series.

The Spartans and Lobos went back and forth all night until Sebastian Orduno hit an RBI single to give the Spartans a 7-6 advantage in the sixth inning and then in the eighth inning Nathan Cadena hit an RBI single to make it 8-6. The Lobos put one across in the top of the ninth inning, but Cade Van Allen ended it by throwing a strikeout to give the Spartans a huge win.

  • Spear ended the night 2-for-5 and has a career-best nine home runs on the season
  • LHP Jesse Gutierrez came in with a runner on second base and no outs in the fifth inning and got out of it with two strikeouts and a pop out
  • Gutierrez went 4.0 IP which matches his season high and only let up two hits, one run and struck out four on the way to his third win of the season
  • Dalton Bowling hit an RBI single and pushed his SJSU leading career RBI total to 155
  • Orduno went 3-for-4 with two RBI singles and also hit his eighth double of the season
  • Theo Hardy went 2-for-4 with two runs scored
  • Hardy leads the Spartans with 53 runs scored this season
  • Robert Hamchuk extended his hitting streak to a career-best 17 games
  • RHP Nolan George started the game going 4.0 IP with three strikeouts
  • RHP Van Allen came in the ninth to earn his fourth save of the season
  • Jackson Forbes hit a sacrifice fly for his 14th RBI of the season
  • Hunter Dorraugh went 2-for-4 with a run scored
  • Cadena went 1-for-3 with an RBI single and was hit twice
  • Jared Lewis went 1-for-2 and walked in an RBI
  • SJSU had runners on in every inning
  • The Spartans left 12 runners on base including with the bases loaded three times
  • Seven starters scored runs for the Spartans
  • SJSU needs to win at least one more game for a possible chance to be in the Mountain West Championship tournament and two more games to guarantee a berth in the tournament
