Sjostrand Advances to Nationals on Second Day of NCAA West Prelims

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Emilia Sjostrand advanced to the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. for the Women’s Long Jump for San José State Track & Field after the second day of competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds hosted by Arkansas on Thursday from John McDonnell Field. 

In addition to surviving and advancing on to Eugene for nationals, Sjostrand also topped her leading SJSU all-time outdoor performance list mark for Women’s Long Jump with a jump of 6.54m (21 feet, 5.48 inches). She will be competing in one more event at the NCAA West Prelims, the Women’s Triple Jump on Saturday, to try and punch her second ticket to nationals.   

The second day of competition kicked off the women’s first round events in Fayetteville. In order to advance to Eugene for field events, the top 12 marks across all flights of the event advance to nationals. For track events to advance to the quarterfinal rounds on Saturday, the top 24 athletes from each first round individual event will move on with the top three from each heat plus the next six best times qualifying.

  • Sjostrand in the Women’s Long Jump advanced to nationals in Eugene with a wind aided personal best jump of 6.54m (21 - 5.48), qualifying as one of the top 12 marks across the event. 
  • Sjostrand’s jump of 6.54m (21 - 5.48) breaks her own leading SJSU all-time outdoor performance list mark for Long Jump.
  • Sjostrand will compete in her second event of the NCAA West Prelims in the Women’s Triple Jump on Saturday to see if she can go two for two in advancements to Eugene.
  • Sky Hagan took fourth in her heat in the Women’s 100m Hurdles with a time of 13.39 seconds just missing the cut for the quarterfinals and concluding her individual season.
  • Alyssa Bean in her heat of the Women’s 400m had a time of 55.49 seconds, missing the cut for the quarterfinal round and concluding her individual season.
  • Eve Divinity in the first round of the Women’s Long Jump faulted on her three attempts ending her individual season.
