Snow Leads as Spartans Punch Five Tickets to Nationals on Third Day of NCAA West Prelims

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Malachi Snow punched his ticket to Eugene advancing in three events to the NCAA Track and Field Championships for San José State Track & Field after the men’s quarterfinals action on the third day of competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds hosted by Arkansas on Friday from John McDonnell Field.   

Snow started his day off running as part of the Men’s 4x100 Relay, grabbing a qualification to Eugene with a season best 39.27 seconds. After about an hour break, Snow then competed in back-to-back events pulling a double qualification for Hayward Field in the Men’s 110 Meter Hurdles with a personal best time of 13.37 and the 100m with a season best time of 10.00 seconds, which also lowered his SJSU all-time performance list leading mark in the Men’s 100m. Demaris Waters running in the same heat as Snow also qualified for Eugene in the Men’s 110m Hurdles with a personal best time to put two Speed City representatives in the same event at the national championships. Jaden Smith after punching a ticket to Eugene as a part of the Men’s 4x100 Relay squad, then punched his second ticket to Hayward Field this time in the Men’s 400m with a time of 45.61. 

Speed City has now sent athletes to the NCAA nationals for the last three seasons across indoor and outdoor dating back to early 2023. The Spartans increased their number of nationals qualifications from the past two seasons sending eight athletes to the NCAA Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene in two weeks.

  • Snow running in back to back events won his heat in the Men’s 100m with a season best time of 10.00 seconds, earning another qualification advancing to Eugene. 
  • Snow’s time lowers his own SJSU all-time performance leader mark in the Men’s 100m. 
  • Snow, also took third in his heat in the Men’s 110m Hurdles with a time of 13.37, earning a top three qualification to Hayward Field in Eugene for nationals.
  • Waters took fourth in his heat in the Men’s 110m Hurdles with a personal best time of 13.44, earning the top next best time qualification punching his ticket to Eugene. 
  • Smith also took fifth in his heat in the Men’s 400m with a time of 45.61, earning a next best time qualification for the championships in Eugene.
  • In the Men’s 4x100 Relay the squad of Snow, Smith, Cameron Tarver, Isaac Davis, Jeremiah Walker and Jared Jones took third in their heat with a season best time of 39.27, earning a top three qualification for the championships in Eugene.
  • In the 4x400 Relay the squad of Smith, Walker, Harry Overstreet, Isaiah Gilmore, Zaire Waring and Micah Hairston took fifth in their heat with a season best time of 3:06.42, just barely missing the cut for Eugene and ending their season.
