Sjostrand Punches Another Ticket to Eugene on Final Day of NCAA West Prelims

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Emilia Sjostrand punched her second ticket in three days to Eugene advancing to the NCAA Track and Field Championships in the Women’s Triple Jump for San José State Track & Field after the women’s action on the fourth and final  day of competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds hosted by Arkansas on Saturday from John McDonnell Field.   

Sjostrand competing in the fourth and final flight of athletes for the Women’s Triple Jump, on her first attempt put up a season best mark of 13.88m (45-6½) which tied the third best jump in the nation this season. After deciding to forgo her last two attempts, she qualified for nationals at Hayward Field with the third best mark of the day across the event. This will be Sjostrand’s fourth straight trip to the NCAA Track and Field Championships across indoor and outdoor seasons. 

After four days of competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, the Spartans close out competition with eight athletes qualifying for the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Eugene across six events while setting four personal bests and four season bests. San Jose State Track and Field will compete in the Women’s Triple Jump and Long Jump, Men’s 100m, 400m, 110m Hurdles and 4x100 Relay in two weeks at Hayward Field. This will be the most athletes the Spartans have sent to the NCAA Track and Field nationals in program history.

  • Sjostrand in the Women’s Triple Jump advanced to the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Eugene with a season best jump of 13.88m (45-6½), qualifying with the third best mark across the event.
  • Sjostrand’s jump of 13.88m (45-6½) tied the current number three mark in the nation for Women’s Triple Jump this season. 
  • Sjostrand will compete in two events in Eugene at the NCAA Track and Field Championships, in the Women’s Triple Jump and Long Jump.
  • Sjostrand will make a trip to NCAA nationals for the fourth consecutive time in either Women’s Long Jump or Triple Jump across both indoor and outdoor seasons. 
  • The Spartans will send eight athletes to Eugene for the national championships competing in the Women’s Triple Jump and Long Jump, Men’s 100m, 400m, 110m Hurdles and 4x100 Relay. 
  • The eight athletes who punched their tickets to Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. are Sjostrand (Women's Long Jump and Triple Jump), Malachi Snow (Men’s 100m, 110m Hurdles, 4x100 Relay), Demaris Waters (Men’s 110m Hurdles), Jaden Smith (Men’s 400m, 4x100 Relay), Cameron Tarver (Men’s 4x100 Relay), Isaac Davis (Men’s 4x100 Relay), Jared Jones (Men’s 4x100 Relay) and Jeremiah Walker (Men’s 4x100 Relay)
  • With eight athletes punching a ticket to Eugene this is the largest group of national qualifiers in program history. 
  • Speed City has now sent athletes to the NCAA nationals across the last four indoor and outdoor seasons dating back to early 2023.
  • The Spartans over the course of four days of competition at the NCAA West Prelims set four personal bests, Sjostrand in the Women’s Long Jump (6.54m, 21-5½), Snow in the Men’s 100m (10.13) and Waters set two PB’s in the Men’s 110mH (13.47 in first round and 13.44 in quarterfinals)
  • The Spartans also set four season bests over the week, Sjostrand in the Women’s Triple Jump (13.88m, 45-6½), Snow in the Men’s 100m (10.00), the Men’s 4x100 Relay squad (39.27) and the Men’s 4x400 Relay squad (3:06.42). 
  • The program had two SJSU all-time all-condition performance marks broken over the week in the Men’s 100m (10.00 seconds) by Snow and the Women’s Long Jump (6.54m - 21-5½) by Sjostrand. 
  • The SJSU all-time Men’s 100m wind legal record was also broken this week by Snow’s PB time of 10.13. 
  • Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Charles Ryan and his coaching staff, Charmaine Darden, T.J Harris, Maggie Kasberger, Tianna Madison and David Verburg will take the largest contingent of athletes to the NCAA Track and Field championships in their tenure. 

UP NEXT: The Spartans will head to Oregon to compete in the NCAA Track and Field Championships being held June 5-8 at Hayward Field in Eugene.
