SAN DIEGO - Robert Hamchuk hit a two-run home run to lead [3] San José State baseball (24-32, 16-14 MW) in an 8-5 loss against [4] Fresno State (32-27, 16-14 MW) in the first 2024 Mountain West Baseball Championship Game from Tony Gwynn Stadium Saturday night.
The Spartans and Bulldogs will face each other in the winner-take-all Mountain West Championship game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. on the Mountain West Network.
This will be the second year in a row the Spartans have played in the Mountain West Championship game on Sunday as they look for their first back-to-back Mountain West Championship.
Fresno State's Ben Newton hit a leadoff home run to start the game, but the Spartans put two across in the second inning and three across in the fourth inning to take a 5-1 lead. SJSU held the lead until the seventh inning when the Bulldogs put four across and then added three in the ninth to take the game.
- Hamchuk's two-run home run came in the second inning to give the Spartans their first lead of the game
- Hamchuk has 10 home runs this season and three in the Mountain West Championship
- Hamchuk extended his hit streak to 22 games which ties him for third longest in SJSU history
- Hunter Dorraugh went 2-for-5 including an infield RBI single in the fourth inning
- Dorraugh has a season-best 10 game hitting streak
- Dalton Bowling went 2-for-4
- Jackson Forbes had one hit and scored a run
- Matt Spear caught his 15th runner trying to steal this season which leads the Mountain West
- Spear also scored a run and extended his on-base streak to a season-best 16 games
- LHP Ethan Ross started and went 6.1 IP while striking out five in the no decision
- Jeriah Lewis had a sacrifice bunt in the fourth inning that led to two Spartan runs thanks to a Fresno State error
