Zermeno Grand Slam Leads Spartans Sweep Over Utah State in Season Finale

LOGAN, Utah – Reina Zermeno had a grand slam in the top of the second inning to lead San José State softball (18-27, 7-14 MW) in a 7-4 win in their season finale and third game of this final three-game series against Utah State (22-26, 5-15 MW) on Saturday from LaRee & LeGrand Johnson Field in Logan, Utah.

The Spartans fell behind early in this game going down 2-0 in the first inning but answered back quickly with a big five run top of the second inning to reclaim the lead which they would hold on to for the remainder of the game. The Spartans offense loaded the bases after an Ahmiya Noriega double, followed by a fielder’s choice and a couple hit by pitches. The inning was capped off by Zermeno’s grand slam bringing everyone home for her seventh home run of the year. 

  • Zermeno ended her season with a perfect day at the plate going 2-for-2 with a grand slam, a single, four RBIs and two runs scored.  
  • Zermeno’s grand slam was the first of her career and her seventh home run of the season, she finishes as the leader in the clubhouse in HRs. 
  • Zermeno’s four RBIs tied her single-game season high. 
  • Ashley Rico in her last collegiate game went 3-for-4 with three singles and two put outs on defense. 
  • Rico finishes her season strong hitting .533 in her last four games going 8-for-15. 
  • Rico ends her SJSU career having played in 166 games for the Spartans. 
  • Ahmiya Noriega was a triple shy of the cycle going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, a single, one RBI and one run scored. 
  • Ah. Noriega’s three hits set a new single-game season high for the junior. 
  • Mia Reynolds got the start in the circle making her third appearance in three days against her former team. 
  • Reynolds threw her second complete game in three days with a final line of 7 IP, nine hits, giving up four runs with five strikeouts.  
  • Reynolds complete game was her fourth of the season and eighth of her career.
  • Reynolds ends the season leading the pitching staff with 22 starts, 109 innings pitched and 76 strikeouts. 
  • The Spartans offense tallied 24 runs on 34 hits over the weekend against Utah State, a season high in both categories for the team. 
  • The Spartans finish their season on a high note picking up their first sweep of the season on the last weekend. 
  • The Spartans end their season with a final record of (18-27) overall and (7-14) in Mountain West play.
