MINNEAPOLIS - San José State's Assistant Athletics Director for Equipment Services Johnathon Hankinson was named the 2024 Equipment Director of the Year by Clean Out presented by Big Game.
Hankinson joined SJSU in August 2018 and is entering his seventh season with the Spartans working with football while leading the department daily.
He came to San José State with nine seasons of experience working in a lead role equipping college football teams. The native of Jefferson City, Mo., spent three seasons (2015-17) as the football equipment manager at Southeast Missouri State University before accepting the opportunity to join the Spartans.
A 2010 graduate of Central Methodist University, Hankinson played one season of college football for the Eagles before embarking on a career in athletics equipment management in 2006. For four seasons, he supervised a staff of five that serviced as many as 180 football players a season.
Hankinson then spent two seasons (2010 and 2011) as the head football equipment manager at Texas A&M University - Commerce in Commerce, Texas.
Before taking over as the football equipment manager at Southeast Missouri State, he worked for Special Olympics Missouri from 2012 to 2015, organizing district, regional, and statewide training sessions and competitive events.
