PHOENIX, Ariz. - Angel Iniguez scored a penalty kick to lead the fifth seeded San José State (5-7-7, 3-3-3 WAC) men's soccer team in a 1-0 victory over the fourth seed, Utah Valley (8-5-5, 3-3-2 WAC) at Grand Canyon University Stadium in the first round of the WAC Tournament. With the win, the Spartans will advance to the semifinals against the No. 1 seed San Diego State.
- Iniguez, who was named WAC Offensive Player of the Year on Friday, scored his eighth goal of the season and 17th of his career.
- Iniguez’s goal was the first penalty kick of the season for the Spartans.
- The Spartans have now shut out their opponent for the third game in a row.
- SJSU now has seven shutouts on the season.
- Ronin Axelson now has three shutouts in only four starts on the year. He has only allowed one goal in four games.
- Axelson tallied two saves in the game, putting him up to 11 saves on the season.
- Jarette Barajas hit a shot off the post from a free kick.
- The Spartans have now advanced to the semifinals of the WAC Tournament three times in the last four seasons.
