Spartans Advance to WAC Championship on Iniguez’s Game-Winning Goal

PHOENIX, Ariz.  Angel Iniguez scored a game-winning free kick from just outside the box to lead the fifth seeded San José State (6-7-7, 3-3-3 WAC) men's soccer team in a 3-2 comeback victory over the number one seed San Diego State (10-5-3, 7-0-1 WAC) at Grand Canyon University Stadium in the semifinals of the WAC Tournament. With the win, the Spartans will advance to the finals against the winner of the semifinal match between Cal Baptist and Seattle.

  • The Spartans will advance to the WAC Championship for the fifth time since SJSU joined the WAC in 2013 and the second time in the last three seasons.
  • The win is the first SJSU victory over a one seed in the WAC tournament since the Spartans defeated Air Force 1-0 in 2017.
  • Iniguez scored both the game-tying goal and game-winning goal in the match.
  • Trailing 2-0 in the second half, Cameron Cook got the Spartans on the board when he shot the ball at the top of the box with his left foot and into the back of the net.
  • For Cook, the goal marked his third of the season.
  • Daniel Fregoso Bautista and Diego Nieves both earned their first assist of their careers on Cook’s goal.
  • Iniguez tied the game just two minutes later with a goal from a shot with his right foot just outside of the box.
  • Jarette Barajas recorded his first assist of the season on Iniguez’s goal.
  • Iniguez put the Spartans in front with a goal from a free kick, shot with his left foot and into the bottom right corner.
  • Iniguez, the WAC Offensive Player of the Year, now has 10 goals on the season and 19 goals in his career.
  • This marked the third time this season Iniguez recorded multiple goals in a game.
  • The match was the second time this season the Spartans won after facing a two goal deficit, previously completing the feat in a 3-2 victory at Utah Valley on Oct. 5.
