Spartans Get Tough Win Over Kennesaw State

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Hennie Van Schaik, Sydni Summers, and Djessira Diawara all put up double-digit scoring performances to lead the San José State women’s basketball (3-2, 0-0 MW) in a tight 68-64 win against Kennesaw State (2-3, 0-0 C-USA) on Thursday night from Provident Credit Union Event Center.

  • Van Schaik finished with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three blocks on 4-of-11 shooting from the field while going 2-for-8 from behind the arc.
  • Van Schaik set a single-game career-high with three assists while setting new single-game season highs in minutes, scoring, and blocks. 
  • Van Schaik’s five rebounds tied her single-game season high.
  • Summers would score 13 points with one assist and one rebound on 4-of-7 shooting from the field, as well as going 4-for-7 from behind the arc. 
  • Summers currently leads the team with 13 three-points field goals made on the season and sits tied for second place in the Mountain West. 
  • Diawara scored 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field to go with seven rebounds.
  • Diawara’s seven rebounds tied her single-game season high. 
  • Diawara has now scored in the double digits in three consecutive games.
  • Rylei Waugh finished with nine points, five rebounds, and five assists while going 3-for-8 from field goal range. 
  • Waugh’s five assists and five rebounds set new single-game career highs in both categories.
  • Waugh is currently in fourth place in the Mountain West, averaging 32.25 minutes per game. 
  • The Spartans’ defense was strong in this game, holding the Owls to 33% shooting from the field while keeping the offense scoreless in the final 2 minutes and thirty seconds. 
  • SJSU outrebounded Kennesaw St 43-31, which would make an impact as the Spartans scored 15 second-chance points.
  • Scoring off the bench continues to be a strength for the Spartans this season, as they got 30 points from the bench in this game. 
  • This is the second consecutive game in which SJSU scored more than 30 points off the bench.
