SAN JOSE, Calif. - San José State's Christian Powell was named the University Credit Union Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week the conference announced on Tuesday. This is Powell’s first time being named WAC Defensive Player of the Week in his career.

Powell led the Spartans defense in their back-to-back shutouts against Grand Canyon and UTRGV this week. Powell played all 90 minutes in both matches.

Against Grand Canyon, Powell and the Spartans held the Lopes to only three shots, none of which were on goal. Against UTRGV, needing a win or tie to advance to the postseason, the Spartans held the Vaqueros in check. In the match, Powell recorded a team save, preventing a UTRGV shot off a rebound from finding the back of the net and keeping UTRGV scoreless. SJSU finished the regular season with six clean sheets.
