COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Zubair Firdaus has been named the Mountain West Men's Golfer of the Month, announced by the conference on Tuesday.
Firdaus set a tournament record on his way to a top-place finish at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational from Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif., earlier in the month.
- Firdaus is the first Spartan men’s golfer to earn Mountain West honors since Carl Corpus earned Golfer of the Week in February last season.
- Firdaus started off his month representing his home country of Malaysia, where he played for an invite to this year’s Master’s in the 2024 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship at Taiheiyo Club Gotemba in Gotemba, Japan.
- With less than a day’s rest after returning from Japan, Firdaus would finish the Alister Mackenzie Invitational over the next three days with a three-round 54-hole total score of 190 (-23), including a third-round 61 (-10) to win the individual trophy and also help the Spartans win the team championship.
- Firdaus' total score of 190 (-23) is the second-lowest individual 54-hole score for an individual tournament in NCAA men’s golf history.
- His 23-under 190 (66-63-61) over 54 holes is a tournament and an SJSU record.
- Firdaus’ third-round score of 61 (-10) set a tournament record and also tied the lowest single-round score in SJSU program history with Sean Yu, who shot a 61 at the same tournament in the 2019-20 season.
- Firdaus finished second amongst the field with 22 birdies across three rounds of play at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational and also finished third amongst the field of players with 2 eagles.
- Firdaus’ win was the first of his collegiate career.
UP NEXT: The Spartans will rest for the winter season before returning to action in the spring at the Southwestern Intercollegiate on Jan. 27-29 at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif.
