Diawara Leads Spartans in Season-Opening Big Win at Xavier

CINCINNATI - Djessira Diawara scored 11 points to lead the San José State women’s basketball team in their 55-36 season-opening win at Xavier on Tuesday night from the Cintas Center.

  • The Spartans would start off the game in the lead before Xavier would claim the lead, going up by five points going into halftime. 
  • Upon returning from halftime, the Spartan's offense got hot, outscoring the Musketeers 39-15 in the second half to secure their first win of the season.
  • Diawara, in addition to her 11 points, would finish with four rebounds, one block, and one assist. She was 5-for-10 shooting from the field.
  • Sydni Summers also scored 11 points and would finish with four assists and two rebounds. She was 6-for-6 from the free throw line in this game.
  • Summers' six made free throws on six free throw attempts set a new single-game career high for the sophomore. 
  • Amira Brown scored eight points, including two big three-pointers, and had five rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
  • Jasmine Singleton led the team with six rebounds in this game as well as four steals. Her six rebounds tops her single-game season high from last year.

  • Rylei Waugh would finish with seven points, five rebounds, three assists, and one steal.
  • Sofia Kelemeni contributed five points on 2-of-3 shooting from the field, as well as five rebounds, two blocks, and one assist. 
  • Kelemeni's two blocks tie her single-game career high.  
  • The Spartan's largest scoring run of the game was a 20-0 stretch to start the third quarter.
  • The Spartans would score 24 points inside the paint in this game and get 19 points off the bench.   
  • The win marks the Spartan's first against a Big East current or former member school. 
  • This was the Spartans first game against a Big East school since 2005 when they played Rutgers while they were members of the Big East.
  • This is the Spartan's first season-opening win and road season-opener win since 2020 against California.
  • 19 points is the largest margin of victory for the Spartans since last season when they beat Bethesda by 94.
