SAN JOSE, Calif. - San José State women’s basketball will open their home portion of the schedule against California at the Provident Credit Union Event Center on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. PT. You can watch the game on the Mountain West Network.
- The Spartans will play in their home opener at Provident Credit Union Event Center on Saturday, Nov. 9.
- SJSU welcomes five transfers to the team: Amiah Simmons (Alabama A&M), Hennie Van Schaik (Louisville), Rylei Waugh (Pima CC), Amira Brown (Tulsa), and Djessira Diawara (Houston).
- The Spartans also added two freshmen to the squad: Mecca Alexander and Stella Sgro.
- The Spartans also welcome back Jasmine Singleton, Nailea Nicholas, Sofia Kelemeni, Maya Anderson, Kaliyah Dillard and Finau Tonga to the team.
- Head coach April Phillips returns for her third season at SJSU.
- SJSU is coming off a commanding 55-36 season-opening win against Xavier at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati.
- The win marks the Spartan's first against a Big East current or former member school.
- This was the Spartans first game against a Big East school since 2005 when they played Rutgers while they were members of the Big East.
- This is the Spartan's first season-opening win and road season-opener win since 2020 against California.
- 19 points is the largest margin of victory for the Spartans since last season when they beat Bethesda by 94.
- Djessira Diawara, had 11 points and would finish with four rebounds, one block, and one assist. She was 5-for-10 shooting from the field.
- Sydni Summers also scored 11 points and would finish with four assists and two rebounds. She was 6-for-6 from the free throw line in this game, setting a new single-game career high.
- Amira Brown scored eight points, including two big three-pointers, and had five rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
- Jasmine Singleton led the team with six rebounds in this game as well as four steals. Her six rebounds tops her single-game season high from last year.
- Rylei Waugh would finish with seven points, five rebounds, three assists, and one steal.
- Sofia Kelemeni contributed five points on 2-of-3 shooting from the field, as well as five rebounds, two blocks, and one assist. Her two blocks tie her single-game career high.
