SAN JOSE, Calif. - San José State's Walker Eget was named to the "Manning Award Stars of the Week" and the "Davey O'Brien Award Great 8", announced by the organizations on Monday.
Eget led the Spartans to a 34-31 victory over Stanford on Friday by throwing a career-high four touchdowns with 33 completions and 385 yards, leading a late game-winning drive to give the Spartans their first win over the Cardinal since 2006.
This was also SJSU’s first against a "power four" school since Sept. 21, 2019, against Arkansas.
These were the first national recognitions for Eget this season, who leads an SJSU offense averaging 325.3 passing yards per game, which is good for tops in the Mountain West and fifth in the country.
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates’ bowl performances in its balloting. Since the Manning Award started recognizing Stars of the Week in 2011, 570 different quarterbacks from 135 schools have been recognized. Sixty-six players were honored during the 2023 season and 74 quarterbacks have been recognized so far in 2024.
The Davey O’Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. Over its time, the Davey O’Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.3 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.
