Spartans with Big Road Win Against San Diego State

SAN DIEGO - Amiah Simmons led the scoring for the third consecutive game, scoring 23 points, while Rylei Waugh contributed 10 points to lead San José State women’s basketball (9-11, 2-5 MW) in a 68-57 win against San Diego State State (14-7, 3-5 MW) from Viejas Arena on Wednesday evening.

  • The Spartans started out slowly, but then the shooters got hot and turned it on in the second quarter, taking the lead into halftime and then playing suffocating defense while making some key buckets to hold that lead for the rest of the game. 
  • This is the Spartans' first win at Viejas Arena since 2015-16.
  • This was also SJSU’s first win against SDSU since 2019-20.  
  • Simmons finished with 23 points with two rebounds and one block and one steal while going 9-for-15 from the field and 3-for-5 from behind the arc. 
  • Simmons has scored 20+ points for the second consecutive game. 
  • This is Simmons' third straight game leading the team in scoring as well as scoring in double digits. 
  • Waugh contributed 10 points to go with six rebounds, two assists, and three steals while going 3-for-9 from the field and 2-for-7 from behind the arc.
  • Waugh set a new career high with her 2-for-7 performance from the three-point line.
  • Waugh also tied her career high with three steals. 
  • Hennie Van Schaik added 7 points, six rebounds, four assists and one block while going 3-for-10 from the field. 
  • Amira Brown scored six points to go with five rebounds and two assists. 
  • Finau Tonga added six points, with four rebounds and one assist while going 3-for-4 from the field. 
  • Djessira Diawara also finished with six points, as well as three rebounds, while going 3-for-4 from the field.
  • The Spartans outshot the Aztecs from the three-point line (31%-17%)
  • Both teams shot equally from the field, shooting 42%.
  • SJSU outrebounded the Aztecs 36-31.
  • The Spartans scored 21 points off the bench in this game; this is the 10th time this season they’ve scored more than 20 off the bench.
