SAN JOSE, Calif. - San José State is adding a home-and-home series with Cal to its 2028 and 2031 non-conference football schedule, announced by Director of Athletics Jeff Konya on Thursday. The first game is set for Sept. 9, 2028, at Cal, and then the Golden Bears come to CEFCU Stadium for only the second time ever on Sept. 13, 2031.
"It has been over three decades since we played the Golden Bears, and I know our fans will be excited to see this Bay Area rivalry rekindled," said Konya. "We will open this series on the road in 2028, and then host Cal in 2031 as part of four non-conference home games in that year. I am appreciative that the two institutions were able to secure a sensible, regional, and attractive series for the Bay Area."
It will be the first time the Bay Area rivals have faced each other in football since 1996, and that was also the only time the Golden Bears have visited CEFCU Stadium. The Spartans and Bears have played 35 times, the first time being in 1899.
Also, in 2031, the Spartans will play four home non-conference games for the first time, hosting UT-Chattanooga, Washington State, Rice, and Cal.
One schedule change for 2025: the Spartans will now play at Stanford on Sept. 27.
