SAN JOSE, Calif. – Reina Zermeno and Shay McDowell both hit their first home run of the season, while Mia Reynolds and Lacie Ham both threw complete games to lead San José State softball (2-5, 0-0 MW) in a 9-2 game one win against Illinois-Chicago (3-4, 0-0 Valley) and a 7-0 win against UC San Diego (1-5, 0-0 Big West) on the first day of the Silicon Valley Classic I from Spartan Softball Complex on Friday.
The Spartan bats came alive on day one of the Silicon Valley Classic I, scoring 16 runs across two games while racking up 21 hits to outmuscle their two opponents in this doubleheader.
Game One vs. Illinois - Chicago
- McDowell finished game one, going 2-for-4 with a home run and a triple with five RBIs and two runs scored.
- McDowell’s home run is her first of the season and second of her career.
- McDowell’s five RBIs set a new career high for the junior.
- Haley Reeve went 3-for-4 with two singles, a double, and one run scored.
- Reeve’s three hits tied her single-game career-high.
- Zermeno went 2-for-4 with a double, a single, and one run scored.
- Ahmiya Noriega finished 2-for-4 with a triple, a single, one run scored, and two RBIs.
- Noriega now has eight triples in her career.
- Aneesa Almaguer went 2-for-4 with a double, single, one run scored and one RBI
- Almaguer’s double is the seventh of her career.
- Gigi Ortega finished 1-for-2 with a single and an RBI
- Ortega’s RBI is the first of her career.
- Reynolds got the start in the circle throwing a complete game with six strikeouts, one earned run, and only gave up four hits.
- Reynolds’ complete game is her first of the season and ninth of her career.
- SJSU’s 15 hits in game one set a new season high for the team.
Game Two vs. UC San Diego
- Zermeno, in game two, finished a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, a single, two runs scored, and two RBIs.
- Zermeno’s home run is her first of the season and 11th of her career.
- Zermeno’s triple is the fifth of her career.
- Noriega finished 1-for-3 with a 2-RBI double and one run scored.
- Sarah Deplitch finished 1-for-3 with an RBI single
- Deplitch’s RBI is the first of her career for the true freshman.
- Reeve went 1-for-3 with a double.
- Aubrie Thomas drew a walk and had an RBI sac fly.
- Ham got the start in the circle for game two, throwing a complete game shutout with nine strikeouts while only giving up four hits.
- Ham’s complete game and shutout are the first of the season for the senior.
- This is Ham’s first shutout since April 17, 2024 against St Mary’s and first complete game since April 12, 2024 against San Diego State.
- Ham’s complete game is the 15th and shutout is the 16th of her career.
