Lopez Ortega Moves Into Top-10, Spartans Maintain Third Place

PALM DESERT, Calif.Lucia Lopez Ortega led the Spartans with a 3-under 68 in the second round to move into the top-10 of the Alice and John Wallace Family Women’s Golf Classic at the Monterey Country Club in Palm Desert. She helped the San José State women’s golf team maintain its third-place standing in the 21-team field on the par-71 course.

  • Lopez Ortega is tied for seventh at 2-under 140. She is one of 11 players in the field who are under par through two rounds of the tournament.
  • She made six birdies in the second round and is tied for second in the field in birdies made in the tournament at nine.
  • Lopez Ortega’s under-par round was one of just 20 recorded in the second round.
  • Moa Andersson is the other Spartan in the top-20 as she shot a 3-over 74 and is tied for 12th at even-par 142. She made three birdies during the round
  • Rebecca Gyllner is tied for 28th at 4-over 146, shooting a 2-over 73 and making two birdies.
  • Nicola Kaminski moved up 14 places, shooting a 2-over 73 on Sunday, and is now tied for 37th at 6-over 148. 
  • She made her third eagle of the season on the par-4, 394-yard eighth hole, and started and ended her round with birdies on the par-4 hole three to start and one on the par-5 second hole to end.
  • Isabella Cioe is tied for 49th at 8-over 150, shooting a 6-over 77. She was 1-under for her first seven holes of the day, making a birdie and six straight to start the round.
  • The Spartans shot a 288 in the second round to maintain their third-place standing at 6-over 574. They are 10 shots behind second-place Southern California. 
  • The team standings are very close from the Spartans (+6) to eighth-place Long Beach State (+17).
    UP NEXT – The Spartans begin the final round on Monday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start, playing with Oregon, Southern California and Washington.
