Spartans Fall at Cal Poly for First Loss of Season

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.– Cheuk Ying Shek, Carla Urchoeguia and Soledad Fayos Capilla all won their respective first sets in singles matches, but San José State (4-1, 0-0 MW) fell 4-0 against Cal Poly (4-2, 0-0 Big West) on Sunday afternoon in the Spartans first loss of the season. 

  • Ying Shek fought diligently, winning her first set after a tie-break, but her singles match remained unfinished
  • Olaya Bances Iglesias and Emma Fantousis were defeated by their opponents in their doubles match, 6-1
  • Ying Shek and Urchoeguia came up short in their doubles match, 6-3
  • Fantousis battled hard in singles but lost 6-4, 6-3 
  • Bances Iglesias was outmatched in her singles match, 6-1, 6-1
  • Duru Durgun fell short, 6-0, 6-0 

UP NEXT: The Spartans will return home to play Saint Mary’s on Feb. 20 at noon after being rescheduled from Feb. 14 due to inclement weather.
