SAN JOSE, Calif. - San José State's Alex Fernandes was named the Mountain West Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. This is the transfer from Memphis' first time being named player of the week in his career.
Fernandes led the Spartans in taking the season opening weekend series over Louisiana on the road. Across the three game series, Fernandes batted 7-for-9, tallying six runs, four RBIs, two doubles, a walk and a stolen base. Fernandes finished the weekend with a slugging percentage of 1.000 and an on base percentage of .800.
In the Spartans 7-2 loss on Friday, Fernandes hit a single in his only at bat in the game. On Saturday, Fernandes went 3-for-4 at bat in his first start of the season. Fernandes drove in a team high four runs, leading SJSU to a 8-3 victory for their first win of the season.
On Sunday, Fernandes again went 3-for-4 at bat. Fernandes finished with four RBIs and two runs, leading the team to a 12-4 victory to take the series. Fernandes also had two doubles, a walk and a stolen base in the final game of the series.
The Spartans will play their home opener against Utah Valley on Thursday, Feb. 20 at Excite Ballpark at 3:05 p.m. The game can be watched on the Mountain West Network.
