Spartans Walk it Off for Their Fifth Win in a Row

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Rocco Caballero hit a walk-off single to lead the San José State baseball team (5-1, 0-0 MW) in a 4-3 victory over Utah Valley (2-5, 0-0 WAC) at Excite Ballpark in the third game of the four game series.

  • The Spartans have now won five games in a row, their first five game winning streak since the 2018 season.
  • The Spartans 5-1 record is their best start to a season since 2011 when they started 6-0.
  • Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and bases loaded, Caballero hit a single to right field, driving in two runs. The game-winning run would be scored off a Utah Valley fielding error.
  • Jeriah Lewis recorded the game-winning run.
  • Jake McCoy hit his first home run of the season with a solo shot in the fifth inning.
  • Alex Fernandes has recorded a hit in all six games this season.
  • David Thomas pitched four innings in his second start of the season. Thomas tallied seven strikeouts while allowing only one earned run.
  • EJ McGrew earned the win, not allowing a single run in his five innings pitched. McGrew also struck out seven batters in the game.
  • McGrew is now 2-0 on the season. In 13 innings pitched, he has an ERA of 0.00.
