SAN JOSE, Calif. – Luca Staiano struck out five and Rocco Caballero had a pair of hits with an RBI to lead San José State baseball (6-2, 0-0 MW) in a 4-3 loss against Santa Clara (4-3, 0-0 WCC) from Excite Ballpark Tuesday afternoon in a lone midweek game.
Santa Clara took the initial lead in the top of the first inning, only to see Caballero hit a double in the bottom of the third inning, scoring Drew Giannini to tie the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Giannini hit in Antonio Nanez to give the Spartans their first lead of the game. Santa Clara then scored a run in both the sixth and seventh innings to take a 3-2 lead. Zach Chamizo tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single, and it was 3-3. The Broncos took the final lead of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning with an RBI double to put the game away, 4-3.
