SAN JOSE, Calif. – Jesse Gutierrez struckout a career-high nine batters and Jake Maroney had three RBIs to lead San José State baseball (7-2, 0-0 MW) in a 7-2 victory over San Francisco (5-5, 0-0 WCC) from Excite Ballpark Friday afternoon in the first game of the three game series.
- The Spartans have now won seven out of their last eight games.
- Gutierrez received the win, pitching eight innings, allowing one earned run, seven hits and no walks.
- Gutierrez held the Dons to a batting average of .077 when they had runners on base and .000 when they had runners in scoring position.
- Gutierrez is second in the Mountain West with an ERA of 1.42.
- Nolan George pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth, striking out two out of the three batters faced.
- Maroney also went 2-for-3 with a run, a sac fly and a stolen base.
- Maroney’s three RBIs in the game was a career-high.
- Alex Fernandes scored two runs and stole two bases. Fernandes leads the team with 10 runs scored on the year and an on base percentage of .545.
- Jake McCoy hit his second home run of the season with his solo shot over the right field wall in the fourth inning.
- Rocco Caballero notched a double and an RBI.
