SAN JOSE, Calif. – Jake McCoy went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Jeriah Lewis hit his third home run of the season to lead San José State baseball (10-5, 0-0 MW) in a 8-5 victory over Utah (11-4, 0-0 Big 12) from Excite Ballpark Sunday afternoon in the final game of the three game series.
The game was back-and-forth early on, but the Spartans took control late into the game. Utah struck first in the second inning, plating three runs. However, Lewis hit a two-run home run in the second inning to put San Jose State on the board. The Spartans took a brief one run lead after scoring two runs in the third, but the Utes would take the lead back in the fourth with two runs of their own.
The Spartans would pull back ahead in the fifth inning with two runs to give them a 6-5 advantage. Jake Maroney recorded the go-ahead RBI off a sacrifice bunt which brought Drew Giannini home from third. SJSU would add two more runs in the eighth, securing the victory and the series for the Spartans.
On the mound, Win Scott (1-1) earned the win, throwing 5.2 innings while allowing three earned runs and striking out five. Nolan George and Tyler Albanese combined for 3.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, with Albanese securing his first save of the season.
- This marks the first series win over a power four opponent since the Spartans won their series against UCLA in February, 2011.
- The Spartans have won all four series played this season.
- Lewis hit a 2-run home run in the game, his third of the season, which leads the team.
- Lewis notched three RBIs in the game, setting a new season-high. His third RBI came on a sac-fly in the fifth inning.
- McCoy went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run. His three hits set a new career-high.
- Antonio Nanez went 2-for-3 and also notched two runs, an RBI and two walks.
- Alex Fernandes has reached base safely in all 15 games this season. He also extended his hit streak to seven games.
- Giannini posted two runs and walked three times.
- Zach Chamizo tallied his team leading 13th RBI of the season in the game.
- Maroney also recorded an RBI.
- Scott received his first win of the season.
- Albanese notched his first save of the season
- George struck out three batters in 2.1 innings pitched in relief, allowing two hits and no runs.
