Spartans Advance With 66-61 Win Over Wyoming

LAS VEGAS —Three Spartans scored in double figures, led by Donavan Yap Jr. with 19 points, as the eighth-seeded San José State men’s basketball team won its first round game against ninth-seed Wyoming, 66-61, Wednesday afternoon at the Credit Union 1 Mountain West Tournament at the Thomas & Mack Center.

  • Yap Jr., was 5-for-10 from the field including 4-for-8 from three-point range. His four three-pointers made is the most for a Spartan player in a MW Tournament game since Ryan Welage made five in 2018 against Wyoming.
  • Sadaidriene Hall added 16 points in the win. He scored 15 of his points in the first half, including 6-for-9 from the field, to help San José State jump out to a 22-point lead at 38-16.
  • Hall scored in double figures in seven games this season, three times against Wyoming.
  • Josh Uduje added 15 points in the win, going 8-for-9 from the free throw line, making two free throws with three seconds left to seal the win for SJSU.
  • Robert Vaihola led the Spartans with nine rebounds including eight defensive rebounds, blocked two shots and had two steals.
  • This is only the second victory for the Spartans at the MW Tournament. In the 2023 tournament's quarterfinals, San José State won 81-77 in overtime over Nevada.
  • San José State grabbed a season-high 11 steals in the win.
  • The Spartan defense held Wyoming to just 2-of-19, 10.5 percent, from three-point range.
  • San José State led from the opening tip, scoring the first 12 points of the game.
