Spartans Defeat San Diego State in Final Game of Series

SAN DIEGO – Alex Fernandes went 2-for-4 and tallied two RBIs and three runs to lead the San José State baseball team (11-8, 1-2 MW) in a 10-2 win over San Diego State (6-14, 2-1 MW) at Tony Gwynn Stadium on Sunday, March 16, 2025 in the final game of the three game series. 

Led by strong offensive contributions and stellar pitching, the Spartans broke open a close game in the later innings. Fernandes led the charge, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a triple. Antonio Nanez added two RBIs, while Jeriah Lewis had two runs and a stolen base.

On the mound, Win Scott (2-1) delivered a dominant performance, pitching six innings while allowing only two runs on five hits and striking out eight. Tyler Albanese came in for relief and shut down the Aztecs’ offense, striking out six batters in three scoreless innings to earn his second save of the season.

San Jose State capitalized on San Diego State’s defensive miscues, scoring four runs in the seventh inning to take control of the game. Key hits from Drew Giannini, Fernandes, and Nanez fueled the offensive explosion, while the Spartans’ defense remained sharp, committing zero errors.

  • The Spartans hit four triples in the game, including two by Jake McCoy. Coming into the game, the Spartans had five triples all year.
  • McCoy leads the Spartans with seven extra base hits on the season.
  • Fernandes improved his on base streak to 19 games, every game so far this season.
