SAN JOSE, Calif. – Alex Fernandes hit a triple and scored a run to lead the San José State baseball team (16-10, 4-3 MW) in a 13-3 loss to Fresno State (11-14, 4-3 MW) at Excite Ballpark on Friday night in the first game of the three-game series.
After a two-run first inning by Fresno State, the Spartans answered with a run of their own in the first inning. Fernandes hit a leadoff triple, who later scored on an RBI groundout by Antonio Nanez.
The Spartans cut into the deficit in the fourth inning when Jeriah Lewis led off with a single, followed by an RBI double from Rocco Caballero. Jake Maroney added another run with an RBI double, making it a 7-3 ballgame after the fourth inning.
Nolan George started for SJSU on the mound, battling through four innings before turning it over to the bullpen. Cade Cushing, Luca Staiano, Joey Cammarata and Hunter Hanes all appeared in relief.
