TEMPE, Ariz.—Four Spartans scored all 13 goals for the No. 18 San José State women’s water polo team on Saturday, but none bigger than Bridget Cranley’s with 34 seconds remaining to give the Spartans a 13-12 victory at No. 7 Arizona State in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe.
- Cranley recorded a hat trick, scoring the first and last SJSU goals of the match and added another in the fourth quarter.
- Darcy Spark and Rose Jensen each had four goals in the win.
- Jennine Osorio rounded out the Spartan scoring with goals in the second and third quarters.
- The Spartans scored three times in the first and were tied with the Sun Devils, 3-3, after the first quarter.
- The defense took over in the second quarter, holding ASU to just one goal as SJSU led 6-4 at halftime.
- In the third quarter, Jensen scored her third goal of the match to give SJSU a 7-4 lead.
- Osorio again gave SJSU a three-goal lead with 47 seconds remaining in the third quarter at 10-7.
- Spark converted a penalty shot with 3:09 left in the match as San José State led 12-10.
- Arizona State tied the match at 12-12 with 2:10 remaining, before Cranley’s goal with 34 seconds remaining in the match gave the Spartans the 13-12 win.
- Nynke Willemsen assisted on two of the team’s first three goals of the match.
- Spark also had two field blocks and two steals in the win.
- Spartan goalie Grace Smith made eight saves
- The Spartans improve to 12-10 on the season and 1-3 in MPSF play.
