SAN JOSE, Calif. – Kyle Calzadiaz struck out a career-high six, while Alex Fernandes and Antonio Nanez hit clutch RBI singles to lead the San José State baseball team (17-10, 5-3 MW) in a 2-1 win over Fresno State (11-15, 4-4 MW) from Excite Ballpark on Saturday afternoon in the second game of the three-game series.
After seven scoreless innings, the Bulldogs struck first in the top of the eighth. Eddie Saldivar led off with a bunt single, followed by a single from Justin Stransky. Triston Gray then delivered an RBI single to left field, bringing home Saldivar to give Fresno State a 1-0 lead.
The Spartans responded immediately in the bottom of the eighth. Jake McCoy led off with a single up the middle, prompting Fresno State to bring in relief pitcher JT Guerrero. With two outs, Fernandes and Nanez delivered RBI singles, scoring Jared Lewis and Jake Maroney to give SJSU a 2-1 advantage.
On the mound, Calzadiaz was dominant for San José State, throwing 6.1 shutout innings while allowing just two hits and striking out six. EJ McGrew (4-1) earned the win in relief, and Tyler Albanese recorded his fourth save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.
