SAN JOSE, Calif. – Win Scott allowed two hits and struck out three in seven innings pitched to lead the San José State baseball team (17-11, 5-4 MW) in a 4-2 loss to Fresno State (12-15, 5-4 MW) at Excite Ballpark on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the three game series.
The Spartans held a 2-1 lead heading into the final frame, but a late push by Fresno State saw them plate three runs in the top of the ninth to claim victory.
The Spartans broke through in the seventh inning when Jake McCoy’s RBI single drove in Rocco Caballero, followed by an RBI triple from pinch-hitter Zach Tallerman to give the Spartans a 2-1 advantage.
Fresno State responded in the ninth, taking a 4-2 lead. The Spartans attempted a comeback in the bottom half, with back-to-back singles from Caballero and Jeriah Lewis, but the rally was cut short as the Bulldogs closed out the win.
Despite the loss, the Spartans saw strong pitching performances from starter Scott, who held Fresno State to no earned runs through seven innings.
