SAN JOSE, Calif. – Zach Chamizo and Jake McCoy each had a pair of hits to lead San José State baseball (9-5, 0-0 MW) in a 5-3 loss against Utah (11-3, 0-0 Big 12) from Excite Ballpark Saturday afternoon in the second of a three-game series.
The Spartans battled throughout the contest, tying the game three times before Utah capitalized on late opportunities to secure the win. SJSU collected eight hits in the game, including standout performances from Chamizo (2-for-4, triple) and McCoy (2-for-4, two RBIs).
San José State’s pitching staff put up a solid effort, with David Thomas (4.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) getting the start before EJ McGrew and Tyler Albanese closed out the game. McGrew (4.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K) suffered his first loss of the season (3-1), while Albanese pitched a scoreless ninth.
Utah’s pitching proved to be the difference, with Merit Jones (8.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 6 K) earning the win and Cameron Nielson closing it out in the ninth for the save.
After exchanging runs in the early innings, Utah pulled ahead in the ninth, taking advantage of a San José State fielding error and a balk that allowed the go-ahead runs to score.
Despite the loss, the Spartans remain a strong force at home with a 7-2 record at Excite Ballpark this season. They will look to bounce back in their upcoming series as they continue to build momentum in the 2025 campaign.
