SAN JOSE, Calif. – Mia Reynolds threw her fifth complete game shutout of the season in addition to tallying her 100th strikeout of the season while Shay McDowell had a big two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth to lead San José State softball (18-20, 5-7 MW) in a 4-0 shutout win over Nevada (30-11, 8-3 MW) from Spartan Softball Complex on Friday night.
After five scoreless innings, the Spartans broke through in the bottom of the sixth, stringing together a clutch rally sparked by a leadoff walk from Jules Ronquillo. Reina Zermeno followed with a walk of her own, setting the table for Shay McDowell, who delivered a two-run triple to left center — her fourth three-bagger of the year. The inning continued with Aneesa Almaguer driving in a third run with a single, and Aubrie Thomas tacking on an RBI to cap the four-run outburst.
Defensively, San José State was flawless, committing zero errors and stranding seven Nevada base runners. The Spartans' infield was especially sharp, snuffing out multiple threats and turning key outs in late innings.
Reynolds tossed a complete game gem, scattering just four hits while striking out two in her 11th win of the season. She went the distance on 106 pitches, efficiently keeping Nevada off balance throughout. Nevada starter Hailey McLean took the loss after surrendering four earned runs in 5.1 innings.
The Spartans will look to carry the momentum into Game 2 of the weekend series on Saturday.
