RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif.—Lucia Lopez Ortega made her first collegiate title a memorable one as she finished 5-under par to win the 2025 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Individual Championship at Mission Hills Country Club. San José State tied for first with UNLV but fell to the Rebels in a two-hole playoff.
- Lopez Ortega shot a 3-under 69 in the final round, making five birdies in the round, including birdies on 13, 15 and 17 to clinch the win.
- She entered the final round tied for first at 2-under par and shot a 1-under 35 over her first nine holes.
- After a bogey on the first hole, Lopez Ortega made birdies on two of the next 3 holes and then made eight consecutive pars before finishing birdie-par-birdie-bogey-birdie-par.
- She led the field in birdies made with 13 and on the par-5 holes at 6-under. She shot even par on the par 4s, second-best in the field.
- Prior to her win, her best finish as a Spartan was second place at the 2023 NCAA Championships.
- Lopez Ortega is the third Spartan to win the individual MW title in the past four years – Natasha Andrea Oon in 2022 and Kajsa Arwefjäll in 2024.
- The Spartans and Rebels went to a playoff for the first in tournament history. Four other times the championship was decided by one shot, including 2014 when SJSU fell to New Mexico.
- After the two teams tied on 18, the playoff moved to hole 1 where UNLV clinched the victory.
- Two other Spartans finished in the top-10 standings.
- Moa Andersson shot a 76 on Thursday to finish seventh at 5-over 221, her best finish of the season and her Spartan career.
- Nicola Kaminski tied for eighth place at 7-over 223, her best finish at a MW Championship in her career and best finish of the season.
- Rebecca Gyllner tied for 26th at 15-over 231, while Isabella Cioe shot a 78 to finish tied for 26th.
- For the tournament, San José State led the field in birdies made with 42 and on the par 3s at +12.
- The tournament went to a playoff after the Spartans got a birdie from Kaminski to bring SJSU to within a stroke of UNLV in the team standings and moved into a tie after UNLV’s Toa Yokoyama recorded a bogey on 18 to end the round.
UP NEXT – The Spartans will await word on NCAA Regional selections. The announcement will be made on Wednesday, April 23, on the GOLF Channel at 10 a.m. PT.
