SAN JOSE, Calif. – Rocco Caballero went 2-for-3 with a double and stole a base to lead the San José State baseball team (20-18, 8-8 MW) in a 5-2 loss to San Diego State (12-26, 8-8 MW) at Excite Ballpark on Thursday night in the first game of a three game series.
The Spartans jumped on the board early, scoring in the bottom of the first when Alex Fernandes reached on a single and came home on a sacrifice fly by Zach Chamizo. After San Diego State plated two runs in the third, SJSU responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning, courtesy of Antonio Nanez’s RBI groundout, tying the game at 2-2. However, the Aztecs capitalized on a pair of key innings, using a solo home run in the fourth and two additional runs in the sixth to pull away..
On the mound, starter Kyle Calzadiaz battled through four innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks, before turning it over to reliever Nolan George, who threw five innings and struck out four.
