LAS VEGAS – Aubrie Thomas had a multi-hit game, including an RBI-single, while Mia Reynolds pitched her ninth complete game of the season to lead San José State softball (18-23, 5-10 MW) in a 2-1 nine-inning loss against UNLV (20–22, 3-12 MW) in game one of this two-game series from Eller Media Stadium on Friday afternoon.
San José State battled throughout the game but was unable to score until the ninth inning. The Spartans finally broke through when Aubrie Thomas singled to right center, driving in Reina Zermeno for the team’s only run. The team's offense produced 10 hits, with standout multi-hit performances from Thomas, Jules Ronquillo, and Aneesa Almaguer. However, they stranded 13 runners on base, struggling to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
The Rebels were held to only four hits, but in the bottom of the ninth inning capitalized on two timely hits, driving in two runs to secure the win.
Reynolds got the start and pitched a complete game, going 8.2 innings and allowing just four hits while striking out three. Despite her solid performance, Reynolds took the loss after the game-winning runs in the bottom of the ninth.
UNLV's Yanina Sherwood was credited with the win, pitching a complete game and allowing one earned run on 10 hits while striking out five.
