SAN JOSE, Calif. – David Thomas allowed two earned runs in six inning pitched to lead the San José State baseball team (20-19, 8-9 MW) in a 9-3 loss to San Diego State (13-26, 9-8 MW) at Excite Ballpark on Friday night in the second game of a three game series.
The Spartans were within striking distance for most of the game and trailed by just two heading into the final frame before the Aztecs erupted for five runs in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach.
Zach Tallerman led the Spartan offense with a 2-for-4 night at the plate, driving in a run in the eighth inning to keep SJSU within reach. Alex Fernandes also reached base three times, collecting a hit, two walks and his 12th stolen base of the season. Pinch hitter Jake McCoy added an RBI single in the seventh, marking his 25th RBI of the season.
On the mound, Thomas gave San José State a strong start, going six innings while allowing just two earned runs on seven hits. The Spartans’ bullpen combined to pitch the final three innings, with EJ McGrew and Joey Cammarata each seeing action in relief.
