SAN JOSE, Calif. — Oscar Mendoza, has been named as an Assistant Coach on the San José State Women’s Soccer coaching staff as announced by head coach Sonia Curvelo.

“I am excited about the new addition of Coach Oscar being part of our women’s soccer program at San José State,” said Curvelo. “He brings a wealth of experience in the collegiate game. He has worked in an environment where student-athletes won championships and competed in the NCAA Tournament, and is passionate about building a championship program here at San José State.”

Mendoza joins the Spartans from Sam Houston State, where he was a part of Curvelo’s coaching staff with the Bearkats.

Mendoza joined Sam Houston State’s coaching staff in June 2022. In 2023, Mendoza helped lead Sam Houston to a dramatic improvement, doubling the team’s win total from the previous year while qualifying for the Conference USA tournament and winning their opening-round match against FIU.

Mendoza spent the previous two seasons on Curvelo's staff at Prairie View and helped the Panthers win their second SWAC championship in three years during the 2021 fall season. He will work with goalkeepers and field players on technical skills.

Mendoza has more than 20 years of coaching experience at the collegiate, international, and club levels and spent the previous four years before Prairie View as the head coach of New Mexico Highlands' women's soccer team. While there, he guided 11 players to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference postseason accolades, while six more earned RMAC player of the week awards.

Prior to his time at New Mexico Highlands, Mendoza spent one season as an assistant coach at Cleveland State, where he helped the Vikings reach the Horizon League tournament for the first time in five seasons.

Mendoza is a 2006 graduate of UTEP with a degree in history and has a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from New Mexico State. While at UTEP, he was a starting forward on the men's club team, which participated in the NIRSA National Soccer Championship.
