Spartans Outlast New Mexico in Slugfest

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Jeriah Lewis and Zach Chamizo each went 3-for-6 with four RBIs to lead the San José State baseball team (21-23, 9-12 MW) in a 14-12 victory over New Mexico (25-18, 12-9 MW) at Santa Ana Star Field on Sunday afternoon in the final game of a three game series. The game was played in 17-31 mph winds.

The Spartans’ offense erupted for 16 hits, led by multi-hit performances from Rocco Caballero, Chamizo, Lewis, Zach Tallerman and Alex Fernandes. The Spartans scored multiple runs in four different innings, including a four-run second and a three-run seventh, holding off a late charge from New Mexico.

On the mound, Nolan George battled through 4.2 innings before turning it over to the bullpen. EJ McGrew (6-1) picked up the win, navigating out of a jam in the middle innings, while Tyler Albanese locked down his sixth save with a strong final two frames, striking out four.

  • Chamizo recorded his 15th multi-hit game and his eighth multi-RBI game of the season
  • Chamizo extended his on base streak to 12 games
  • All of Lewis’ three hits were for extra bases, including a double, triple and home run
  • Lewis’ home run was his eighth of the season which leads the team
  • Lewis’ four RBIs tied his career-high. Lewis now has 33 RBIs on the season which also leads the team
  • Jake McCoy also hit a home run which was his fifth of the season
  • McCoy and Antonio Nanez each posted two RBIs
  • Caballero went 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and a walk
  • Caballero went 9-for-13 across the three game series at New Mexico
