Spartans Fall in Series Opener to Washington State

PULLMAN, Wash. – Jake McCoy and Drew Giannini each hit a home run to lead the San José State baseball team (17-13, 5-5 MW) in a 10-2 loss to Washington State (11-18, 5-5 MW) at Bailey-Brayton Field on Friday afternoon in the first game of the three game series.

McCoy got the Spartans on the board in the second inning with a solo home run to left field, his fourth of the season. Later in the eighth, pinch hitter Giannini added a spark with a solo shot of his own to right field, marking his first homer of the year.

The Spartans were held to five hits in the game, with Zach Chamizo collecting a pair of singles. However, early runs from Washington State—including a four-run third inning—put the Spartans in a deficit they couldn’t overcome.

On the mound, starter Nolan George (2–2) took the loss, allowing seven runs over four innings. Relievers Luca Staiano, Timmy Reeve, Joey Cammarata, Brady Pavlovsky, and Tyson Pereria combined to finish the game, allowing three additional runs while striking out seven.

  • The Spartans now have 17 home runs on the season
  • Chamizo went 2-for-4, marking his tenth multi-hit game of the season.
  • McCoy leads the Spartans with 24 RBIs
  • Washington State left seven on base

UP NEXT: The Spartans will rematch Washington State tomorrow, at 2:05 p.m. in Pullman, Wash. The game can be watched on the Mountain West Network.
