Spartans Fight, Drop Close Game to San Diego State

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Reina Zermeno had her second straight multi-hit game including an RBI single and Mia Reynolds put in another solid complete game effort to lead San José State softball (22-25, 9-11 MW) in a 2-1 loss against San Diego State (31–16, 14-6 MW) in game one of this regular season ending three game series from SDSU Softball Stadium on Thursday evening.

Reynolds went the distance for San José State, tossing six innings and allowing just three hits, two runs, one earned, and striking out three without issuing a walk. Her performance kept the Spartans within striking distance throughout the game.

San Diego State broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning and added what proved to be the winning run in the sixth. The Spartans mounted a rally in the top of the sixth, capitalizing on a fielding error and a clutch RBI single from Zermeno to bring in Ahmiya Noriega, but the Aztecs’ bullpen was able to close it out in the seventh.

Zermeno led the Spartans at the plate, going 2-for-3 with the team’s only RBI. Aneesa Almaguer and Noriega each added singles as part of San José State’s four-hit effort.

Cece Cellura earned the win for SDSU, striking out seven in six innings of work, while Grace Uribe recorded the save.

The Spartans will look to bounce back in Game 2 of the series as they continue their Mountain West road swing.
