SAN JOSE, Calif. - Win Scott tossed 5.1 solid innings and Jake McCoy delivered a clutch two-RBI triple in the first inning, but San José State baseball (25-27, 12-16 MW) came up just short in a 3-2 loss to Nevada (32-20, 18-10 MW) Thursday evening at Excite Ballpark.
Scott struck out three while allowing just two runs on four hits before handing the ball off to reliever Nolan George, who struck out five over 3.2 innings of work. Offensively, McCoy paced the Spartans with a 2-for-3 night that included his third triple of the season to give San José State an early lead.
Nevada responded with a run in the fifth and a two-run homer from shortstop Matt Ball in the sixth to take the lead. Despite an eight-hit effort, the Spartans were unable to break through again against Wolf Pack pitching, stranding seven runners on base.
Jake Maroney and Alex Fernandes each added a double for the Spartans, while Jeriah Lewis, Zach Chamizo, and JC Osorio-Agard each chipped in a hit. San José State turned one double play and played error-free defense in the loss.
